CUJO: Day 1 of Play

First day of competition. 14 guys. 6 girls. Not really sure what to expect. We were slated to face Mofo, RessureXion and X2 and would have to win at least 1 game in order to have a shot at top 8 (our pre tourney goal). Leah and I had CUJO get in a good warmup before the game since we knew that the guys wouldn’t get a ton of play time since we had so many dudes. We had had many talks before nationals about how we wanted to run our lines and decided that because we are a developmental team, we would try to get everyone playing – many of our guys are in grade 10 and have 2 years left after this so we wanted it to be a great experience for them so they keep coming out and will be that much better for the next 2 nationals.

CUC Photos – Day 1

One of my good friends, Lee Gonzalez, has accompanied his girlfriend (Tawnya on PPF) to Sherbrooke (who could blame him, it’s a pretty town) and while here he’s been roped into taking photos for me.

He’s photographed a few games of Mixed, Open, and Women’s from which we’ve selected some photos for you.  These photos are also available on Facebook.

ROY – Day 1

JJ Santos has played with many of the Waterloo players for a few years since his teacher introduced Ultimate to him in high school (Scott Kemp on Maverick).  JJ and I have played with Too Bad this season and practiced with Maverick.  He’s a kid that’s just starting to learn about the game and already playing quite well.  After Too Bad failed to make Nationals he picked up with ROY and has been playing quite a bit on their D line.  Here’s his day 1:

2 buses, a coach, a subway and an 8 hour car ride later, and I’m in Sherbrooke. With ROY. That’s awesome.

Moondoggies – Day 1

As I ask other teams to submit daily reports I figure I should do one for our team as well.

Moondoggies are a team captained by some of the younger players on GOAT (Mike Jones for this tournament) and they’re considered an experiment by outsiders.  Many of the players get to head to tournaments that GOAT wouldn’t go to and thus show their skills while developing through more playing time.

Lotus – Day 1

Carla Difillipo of Lotus was kind enough to send in the following update on their first day at CUC 2010.

Lotus started the tournament with a game against Qub. The game started exchanging points until we scored a few breaks in a row. Veteran Mal Lundgren was looking for her first game back from ACL surgery and she quickly got back into her groove with big D’s and big hucks. Ottawa cutter Viv Bartlett was showing great speed in the mid field and Sarah Kidd owned  the endzone.

CUJO: Day 1 – Arrival

A few minutes after I arrived at the dorms today I ran into Rob McLeod (of ultimaterob.com) who is where coaching the Calgary juniors team: CUJO.  We chatted face to face for the first time and afterwards Rob indicated he’d send me a blog post.  Much like a lack of Women’s coverage (which we’re working on, I swear!) we have a lack of Juniors coverage.  Hopefully the contributions of the Juniors writers for CUC will help you in recognizing how important and vital Juniors development in and outside of CUC is.  Now, the post:

CUJO, the Calgary Juniors team, is made up of mostly grade 10′s, a few grade 12′s and a few grade 9′s. It’s good that most of our team still has 2 years left; it’s tough because coming to Canadian Nationals means that the top juniors teams will be grade 11′s and 12′s so we are at a disadvantage. However, since it’s the first Nationals for 19 of our 20 kids, they aren’t really thinking about that. They’re thinking more about how excited they are to put on their cleats, put on their CUJO jerseys and start playing ultimate.

Overdrive Blog Part 1: Shake & Bake

As part of our CUC coverage we asked captains, coaches, and players to send us updates and their thoughts so we could share them with our readers.  We start with a blog post from a group of Toronto Juniors that play on Overdrive:

Overdrive was started with a dream, a vision if you will. This vision belonged to the one and only G-Master Wang (Gary). This dream is the fuel to our fire, the glory to our hole; it is what wakes us up in the morning, and puts us to sleep at night. This dream is to win.
